How does design influence skilled labour?
In our consumer world there is a demand for quality product at a low price. To achieve this the design process is sometimes more about production efficiency than artistic expression. With 3D cad software and sophisticated CNC processes a designer can create a model, structurally test it and then send to be machined with great accuracy. These processes can then be costed and used in mass production of that design or component without it ever being touched by a "skilled" labourer.
So is production orientated design reducing the need for skilled labourers?
Does the lack of human influence make for a better, more consistantly higher quality product?
Does this kind of automated production forsight at the design stage de-value the final product? or is it the opposite and should be valued more because of the quality of design?
